How the estimates work

The lifetime figures are estimates built from your assumptions. They are not Census figures. The calculation is one-way minutes × trips per workday × days per week × weeks per year × years worked.

  • The commute is held constant for the whole working life. Real careers change jobs, homes, traffic and remote-work arrangements.
  • Only travel time counts. A year is 365 days of 24 hours, a waking day is 16 hours and a workweek is 40 hours.
  • A county average hides a wide spread. The distribution chart shows how many people commute far longer or shorter than the average.

About the data

  • Average commute is aggregate travel time (table B08013) divided by commuters (table B08303), the method behind the Census Bureau's published mean travel time. The ± range is an approximate 90% margin of error.
  • The survey covers workers 16 and over who did not work from home. The 2020–2024 period includes the pandemic years, when remote work was unusually common. The work-from-home share comes from table B08301.
  • Loving County, Texas has no published aggregate travel time, so its average is estimated from the distribution's bin midpoints.
  • Boundaries are the Census Bureau's 2024 counties, including Connecticut's planning regions and Puerto Rico's municipios. A few far-western Aleutian islands are left off the drawing.
